Why was Arjun beloved of his Guru ?

Most people believe that Dronacharya was partial towards Arjun but actually he was not. He was partial towards one person only, his son Ashwathama.

Not only Dronacharya almost everyone liked Arjun, it is because of the person he was. A kind man who is always ready to forgive, ready to give up his ego and willing enough to learn.

Dronacharya started to like him seeing his devotion for his Guru.

Dronacharya was teaching the Kuru princes for the sake of taking revenge from his friend Drupad. Before starting with their education he informed them about his Gurdakshina and asked them if they will fulfill his wish.

All of them were silent but Arjun immediately made a vow to take the revenge for his Guru. At this point Dronacharya hugs and and starts to cry.

When the princes were staying in the Ashram, learning the art of warfare from Dronacharya, he used to give them pots to fill them with water during the break.

Everyone got a pot with a small opening except for Ashwathama. So that that his beloved son can fill the water quicker and come back and learn certain things secretly.

Arjun sensed something was going on.

A normal student would do either of the three things in this case -

  • Remain silent about it
  • Ask his guru why he is being so partial
  • Find a new guru who is willing to teach him.

But Arjun chose to do neither of the above. He started filling his pot with Varunastra and returned along with Aswathama and requested his guru to bless him with his teachings.

Dronacharya was impressed by this. Not everyone can give up their ego for the sake of knowledge but Arjun did.

Since that day Dronacharya started paying a little extra attention on Arjun and he didn’t fail his Guru. He grew up to become one of the greatest warriors we have ever had.

As a warrior he is unmatched, but as person we must all try to become like Arjun.
